Help for Hoima

"We have so much and always want more; they have so little and are always happy"

We work on the ground with the Ugandan people to help give them a better present and future, irrespective of religion or race, by providing clean water, food, healthcare, education and buildings.

News: 2003-2007 and beyond

One of the major concerns for Hoima was the need for the provision of better health care. Just how we could make a difference in this crucial area was one we struggled with for a long time. HIV/AIDS, Malaria, death through child birth and severe burns were some of the more obvious signs of need. The hospital that supports Hoima and the surrounding villages is currently ill-equipped and under resourced.

Health

Hoima Hospital

We have established an ongoing relationship with the Medical Superintendent in order to have a better understanding of where to focus our support. Ongoing funding has been provided for the purchase of medicines and these are taken daily to the hospital to help the most needy. Very often, mothers have nothing in which to clothe their babies. 200 maternity packs for new born babies were provided and personally distributed. Funding enabled much needed new mattresses to be provided for the maternity and pediatric wards. A possible link between the NHS trust and Hoima hospital is being explored.

Azur Clinic

The Azur private health clinic provided the much needed solution to a serious problem. Mothers continue to die in child birth. There was inadequate and insufficient maternity care. We decided to commit to the funding and ongoing support of a new maternity wing. We gained full support for the project from the Hoima hospital which recognised the extreme need.

At time of writing a 16-bed maternity ward is almost completed. Generous funding has already been received for the cost of two midwives at £100 per month.

Children & Education

We help clothe, feed, educate and medicate 40 children in the Mustard Seed Orphanage. We planned, rebuilt and completed Duhaga Boys' School, providing 13 new classrooms, new kitchen, office and magnificent hall for over 1200 pupils. We are supporting Bishop Nathan's aim to provide secondary education for girls. The Canon Njangali Girls' School project is underway. The next phase is to build a much needed new classroom and a science laboratory.

The Mothers' Union Vocational Centre is providing vocational education for girls who are unable to attend secondary education. Over three years, we have provided a new kitchen complex, a new roof and new fencing to enclose the site, as well as teaching resources and staff.
